An Optical Trick Makes The Waltz Cup And Saucer Look Like They’re A Matching Set

Matching tea cups and saucers aren’t new. In fact, that’s the entire reason they’re usually sold in pairs.  While this Waltz Cup and Saucer set looks like they match, they actually don’t. The cup is just designed to match practically anything it’s set down on.

Designed by Japanese outfit D-Bros, the saucer is, in fact, the only one emblazoned with the colorful patterns. The cup, on the other hand, is completely blank. Instead, they managed to make them look like matching sets by leaving the cup in a mirrored finish, so it merely reflects the pattern on the saucer when you set it down after a sip.

Having a reflective material doesn’t mean the teacup is made from glass. Instead, the Waltz Cup and Saucer are actually crafted from Hasami porcelain, a type of ceramic that’s considered a specialty in Japan’s Hakata region.   Each of the cups are meticulously made and finished by hand using a palladium coating, in order to ensure that the entire surface is perfectly even, as even the slightest variance can do enough to destroy the illusion of the matching set.

Since the cups are mirrored, you can pair them with any of you favorite saucers and enjoy the same matching result. Pretty awesome. Dimensions are 93mm x 65 mm for the cup (d x h) and 185 x 24 mm for the saucer.

Priced at $86 a set, the Waltz Cup and Saucer set isn’t exactly the kind of thing you’ll probably buy on a whim. If you’ve got the extra cash, though, mirrored teacups sure sound like a wonderful addition to any cupboard.
